Soulful Artistry:
Celebrate Your Pet with Hand-Drawn Portraits
Cherish your beloved pet
Hand-drawn pet portraits are incredibly special compared to photographs. They go beyond mere visual representation, capturing the soul of the animal in a way that photographs often can’t. The artistic touch adds emotional depth that makes each portrait unique and meaningful.
For me, these portraits are not just images; they are a cherished way to celebrate and remember beloved pets. The artist’s interpretation and attention to detail result in a portrait that feels alive, reflecting the pet’s personality and essence. It’s this ability to capture the soul of the animal that makes hand-drawn pet portraits so special and treasured.
Hello,
I’m Uljana
I have been drawing since the moment I was able to hold a pen. As so many girls I was obsessed with horses and they became my main subject to draw. I never owned my own horse but learned horse riding at the age of 12.
When I was 16 years old I started drawing using coloured pencils and even started taking commissions for horse portraits. Although I loved drawing and have followed a design direction at university, life happened and I stopped drawing.
After having worked exclusively in the digital industry as user experience designer for the past 18 years I felt something meaningful was missing. This feeling led me to reconnect with my passion for drawing.
Capturing the soul of an animal and touching their owners‘ heart with something I drew makes me so happy.
Currently I live in Germany with my furry friend Yuki.
Choosing a photo for your pet portrait
When commissioning a portrait, selecting the right photo is crucial. It’s essential to ensure that your chosen photo truly captures your pet as you know and cherish them.
Photographing Your Pet
Capturing a high-quality photo of your furry companion can be quite challenging. A well-taken photo significantly impacts the detail in the final drawing, so investing time in getting a great photo is worthwhile.
You don’t need professional photos or fancy cameras; modern phone cameras are excellent and less likely to bother a camera-shy pet.
Here are some helpful tips:
- Opt for good lighting; avoid direct light that may affect your pet’s coloring. I can adjust colors using additional reference photos if needed. A cloudy day or a well-lit room works best, but direct sunlight and shadows can also add character to a portrait.
- Ensure your pet mostly fills the photo frame to capture details like individual hairs and distinctive features.
- Take the photo at your pet’s eye level and with their eyes open; eye reflections can add a magical touch to the portrait.
- Consider including your pet’s collar in the drawing, if desired.
- Choose an angle or pose that reflects your pet’s character and that you personally enjoy.
Don’t be afraid of a little bribery: both the cat and the Akita sat expectantly in front of me while I was holding a treat!
The more photos the better! Please do send across a selection of photos and I can help you choose.
